Do you suffer from burnout symptoms, or do you think that you are currently dealing with a burnout? Help and guidance in your recovery from burnout is extremely important! This way you ensure that your symptoms don’t get worse. But where can you go when you are looking for help for your burnout? And what happens during the treatment? Below, we have listed the answers to these questions.

Where can you go?

  • The general practitioner and assistant practitioner (POH-GGZ)

You can schedule an appointment with your general practitioner to discuss what the assistant practitioner can do for you. An assistant practitioner can get a good picture of your complaints, guide you and investigate whether / what help is needed.

  • Psychologist

You can get a referral for a psychologist through your doctor, who can guide you more intensively during your recovery process. During the treatment you will actively work with your complaints, pitfalls and recovery. In addition, you draw up a together, to prevent you from ending up in a burnout again in the future!

  • Coach

You can also recover from your burnout with the help of a coach. A burnout is uninsured care, which means that in many cases (but not always) a health insurance company does not reimburse the treatment of a burnout. That is why you can also choose to independently engage a coach who can help you.

  • Company doctor

If you have reported sick at work, you are probably already in contact with the company doctor. The company doctor will discuss with both you and your employer, how you can gradually start working again. Your employer is legally obliged (by the “Gatekeeper Improvement Act“) to help you with your recovery. The company doctor represents both your interests and those of the employer. He or she will also think about what you need to get back to work.

  • Social worker

Are you in debt, do you have housing problems or problems raising your children? Then a social worker can help you make an action plan. You can get in touch with a social worker through your doctor’s office.

How does the recovery from a burnout proceed?

During your recovery or the treatment of a burnout, you go through a number of phases. You learn to understand and accept that you have a burnout and that you do not know exactly what to expect or how long your recovery will take. The balance between effort (movement) and relaxation (rest) is made. Rest is essential in a burnout! It is also important that your environment knows this. You will investigate the causes of your tension, look under supervision how you deal with situations and how you want to tackle certain situations differently in the future.

At some point you will start with reintegration at work; for example, you start with a number of hours. You will apply all the knowledge you have acquired in your daily life and work. This is done gradually, so that you do not get back to work too quickly and to reduce the chance of you relapsing in the future.

Responsibility for your recovery

You are largely responsible for your recovery process. If you feel that too much pressure is being exerted on you, for example at work, please let them know! Listen to your body and be patient with yourself. Treating a burnout is a process and that includes falling back into your old patterns. Discuss your burnout with your friends and family and have a professional involved in your recovery.

Feeling a bit sad or down, losing interest in going outside or in hanging out with your friends; maybe this is something you recognize, maybe not at all. A lot of people occasionally have to deal with periods in their lives where they aren’t feeling their best. Still for many, reaching out for help from a psychologist is too big of a step; “I’m not doing that bad, am I? I haven’t experienced any terrible or traumatic experiences in my life, I’m sure I’ll be fine”. Esther (30) did look for help and encourages everyone to do so: “Just a few sessions can already help you sort things out. It’s such a shame if you spend your time feeling this way, when it can really help to talk to someone!”. Read Esther’s experience story below.

I hadn’t been feeling well

For a few weeks already, I hadn’t been feeling well; I felt down, tired and didn’t have the energy to see my friends. I locked myself in my home, worked there and didn’t leave the house as much. Naturally I knew that things weren’t going very well, but I also didn’t think it was that bad. I didn’t talk to my friends or family about my feelings. Probably because there is still a bit of a taboo around the subject. I’m not doing that bad, right? It felt so dramatic to look for help just for not feeling well. Don’t we all have days on which we feel a bit down? But, when my friends told me that they were worried about me and wondered why I didn’t talk to them, I decided to take the first step.

It’s probably because of the pandemic

I called my doctor to tell her how I felt. Because of the corona crisis, I wasn’t allowed to go to the doctor’s office at the time. So, my doctor scheduled a telephone appointment in which I had to tell her what’s going on. I found it really hard to describe how I felt over the phone. But, I told her that I didn’t feel well and that I felt very down and didn’t feel like seeing anyone. “Ah, but you’re not the only one feeling like this; a lot of people do! It’s probably because of the corona crisis, it’ll pass”, she told me. I’m not a pushy person, so I decided to leave it at that. “She’s probably right, it’s not that bad. This will pass”, I thought to myself.

What can I do?

But the feeling didn’t pass, so I decided to start looking for answers on Google; what can I do to feel better? I ended up on the NiceDay website and read about the app. I saw that with this app you can start working on yourself, by setting goals or registering feelings for example. This seemed like a great first step, so I decided to go with it. I started to register my feelings, and to challenge myself to go outside every day. But after a while I did get the feeling that it would be nice to talk to someone. So I started an online treatment.

It’s not at all strange you feel like this

I started my online treatment and was assigned to NiceDay psychologist Sarah. Before treatment began I was a little bit sceptical. How can a treatment via telephone be just as effective as a face-to-face treatment? And how can I express my feelings over the phone? However, during my sessions with Sarah I was pleasantly surprised. She understood me, comforted me and told me that it was not at all strange that I felt like this. That it is totally normal to have periods in which you don’t feel well, but that you can do something about it. She told me that she was happy that I decided to look for help, and so was I.

Online treatment via NiceDay

What I really liked about the online treatment is that it’s from my own home, my own safe environment. Sarah and I had our sessions via telephone (without video), which also gave me a sense of anonymity. I didn’t have to see anyone and could comfortably tell my story.

Next to that, being able to register some thoughts or feelings in the app before the start of our sessions, felt very good and effective. I would write about how I was doing, what I had been through or the things that I had to deal with. Sarah was able to view my registrations at any time, after which we could discuss them in our session. Next to that she made a summary of all the things we talked about, and then she would send it to me via the chat. The summary wouldinclude links to articles that applied to my situation and that I could read through.. These were short and clear articles that often provided me with useful tips and information.

Don’t wait too long to reach out

The talks I had with Sarah over the phone have been incredibly helpful and I feel a lot better now. If you are feeling down right now, please reach out for help! Look at the things you can do to improve your situation. It’s totally normal that you go through periods in which you don’t feel god, so don’t be ashamed about looking for help! You’ll notice that after only a few sessions, it’ll help you to sort things out. I would definitely recommend NiceDay; I actually already have!

Are you not feeling well, and would you like to know more about an online treatment via NiceDay? On this website you can find more information about the treatment, and how you can start it.

My name is Denise, I am 23 years old and I have been chronically ill for a few years. That means that I can be found in the hospital regularly. It is a place where I know my way around quite well. Yet I noticed that I was very dependent on others to go somewhere or to do things. Someone always came with me, including to my hospital appointments; I never did anything alone. During the treatment of my illness, this question came up: “Don’t you feel like it would be good to work on this, before we continue with the treatment?”.

Anxious

This question got me thinking. What if one day I can do everything I would like to do again, but I’m too afraid to do it? What if I finally feel good again, but don’t dare to take a walk and still stay at home? What if I find doing something on my own worse than spending my time sick at home? Then this might get in the way of my physical recovery.

The next step

Knowing it was time to do something about my anxiety, I made an appointment with my doctor. I was soon referred to the Parnassia Group and was told that I would be treated online. I found this a bit nerve wracking; I don’t find it very comfortable to talk to strangers on the phone. Still, I wanted to try and take the plunge. If I really didn’t like it, I could always request to see a psychologist face-to-face.

Video calling

I started my online trajectory and found out that I actually liked it. I found video calling a lot less scary than calling. Because you can still see the other person’s reaction and facial expression during the conversation, it quickly feels normal and familiar. It was almost as if I was on the phone with a friend.

Yet many people around me were curious whether it was not very impersonal, but I have never experienced it like that. In addition, I think it also helps that you are in your own environment; this makes it a lot easier to talk than somewhere in a random room.

Always at hand

In addition to video calling, I also made extensive use of the diary in my NiceDay app. I kept track of my thoughts and feelings, and it was a nice idea to know that my therapist was always looking out for me. After that,I started working with the Thought records. It could happen that I suddenly had a terrible panic attack on the subway, which is very annoying with all those people around you. But, I grabbed the app and started filling in a Thought schedule. I went through the questions, “What’s going on?” or “Why are you anxious now?”. That way I could try to calm my panic right away.

It’s going better

I am happy to say that I am now doing very well. I did have a relapse recently, but thanks to the tools I have been given, I can now deal with this. I can convince myself that I can and that I must continue. I still sometimes read articles on www.niceday.app. And if I am to have another relapse, I will just open the NiceDay app again!

Angelique had a burnout and was already receiving help from her practitioner for a couple of months. She received medication for her complaints and had contact moments with her practitioner every week about her progress. However, after having to switch medication for the third time because of the medication not working or heavy side effects, her practitioner decided she needed more help. He referred her to PsyQ and that is when her treatment via NiceDay started. This is Angelique’s experience story with an online treatment via NiceDay.

What did you first think when you heard of the online treatment?

When I was referred for treatment I didn’t know it would be an online treatment yet, I only found out later. However, because my treatment started in April of 2020, in the midst of the first wave of corona, I was not as shocked. At that moment, almost everything was online.

Still, I had to get used to the idea of receiving an online treatment. I was expecting to have to go somewhere and now all of a sudden I had to install an app.I was hoping that they would succeed in treating my burnout through a screen. At my practitioner’s office I had regularly been crying, but was I now supposed to cry online? That still felt a bit strange to me.

How did you end up experiencing this?

This wasn’t that bad eventually! When you have to cry during your sessions, you are in your own safe environment. An environment that feels very familiar, because you’re always there and do not have to travel to an unknown location. When you feel bad, or don’t feel like leaving the house, you don’t actually have to go anywhere!

The relationship with my therapist was also very good. Even though our sessions were online, I did feel a strong connection. She had endless patience and gave me great tips, which I could use again later.

What did you think of the online treatment via NiceDay?

The thing I really liked is that I could write down my thoughts and feelings in between sessions. While I was writing it down, it maybe didn’t have an immediate effect. However, afterwards I often noticed that it felt good to write down my feelings; it allowed me to move on from them. You really feel listened to, because your professional can read and track everything you write down in the app. This gave me a sense of calm and peace of mind.

Did you contact your professional in between sessions?

I did write things down every once in a while, but I mostly used the “Feelings” tracker. This allowed my professional to constantly track how I was feeling, instead of us just talking about it every week. My professional Chevriyen sometimes responded to my registrations via the chat. She would notice that I wasn’t doing all too well, and took the time to ask me what was going on. This was incredibly helpful, because it makes you realise that there is always someone looking out for you. You can write down your sorrow and feelings at any moment, knowing that your professional will eventually read them. That is very comforting.

How are you doing right now?

I haven’t completely gotten back on track when it comes to work, but I do have myself back on track. Chevriyen has given me many tips and tricks and we have also discussed a relapse plan. I notice that I am okay now, and would definitely recommend an online treatment via NiceDay!

An online treatment via NiceDay; what does that actually look like? Can you build a good relationship with your therapist? What is so nice about the app and how does contact in between sessions really work? Rosa (22) sought help for an accumulation of problems in her life. How did Rosa experience online help? Read her experience story here.

No long waiting list

“I was talking to a friend and told her that I was looking for help, but didn’t want to wait such a long time. There had been an accumulation of problems in recent years, but especially the abuse by my ex-boyfriend came to the surface again. My friend told me that her sister had sought help through NiceDay and that you could get started right away. ”

Doubt

“When I heard about the online treatment, I had some doubts. What will that be like? Is it just as personal as a face to face session? But, I put my doubts aside and after two minutes I had installed the app on my phone and sent a message to the NiceDay Team. I received an immediate response and we scheduled an intake interview for less than a week later. I really liked that. The process went very quickly and I did not have to wait long for a response. ”

It saves so much time if I can register my experiences and feelings in the app during the week, and my practitioner has already read them when we have another session.

Relationship practitioner

“After my intake interview, I was quickly linked to NiceDay professional Sarah. As I mentioned I had some doubts about the online treatment, but those were immediately taken away during our first session. I felt good and comfortable. The afternoons after our conversations I often noticed that I was much more productive and active! I immediately felt more like doing things. Sarah often sent me helpful articles that I could read to become more active. This also kept me working on my recovery between our sessions. ”

Previous treatment vs NiceDay

“I think it is a great advantage of a treatment through NiceDay that I don’t have to repeat my story over and over again. I have previously been in treatment where I had less contact in between sessions. Of course you can send your practitioner an email when things aren’t going well, but you can’t do this every day. I also had to repeat everything during the session. It saves so much time if I can register my experiences and feelings in the app during the week, and my practitioner has already read them when we have another session.”

NiceDay

“Thanks to this treatment, I have gained more insight into how I am doing and what I can do about it. It has helped me to communicate better with my current partner. Plus, I have received enough tools to be able to continue working on this in the future! ”

“I would therefore definitely recommend a treatment through NiceDay. The biggest reasons for this are being able to start treatment quickly and the contact in between sessions. During your journey, there is one person for you who you can always chat with when things really go wrong. This makes this treatment, despite being online, a lot more personal.”

Evy is 18 years-old, studies Journalism and is in the prime of her life. At an unexpected moment, she experiences something she had never experienced before: she had a panic attack. Not knowing that was what she was feeling, she thought there was something wrong with her heart. However, physically there was nothing wrong with Evy. Shocked and advised by a friend, she created an account with NiceDay that evening. Read more about Evy’s experience with online help below.

Quickly contacted

“Because I was very shaken by my panic attack, I wanted help as soon as possible, but I lived in Tilburg and was still registered with my GP in Zeeland. I did not want to wait and beside, I did not like the idea of first telling my story to the doctor’s assistant and then again to a doctor. I was afraid this was going to take too much time and spoke to a friend about it. He told me about NiceDay, which he knew through another friend. Through NiceDay I was able to quickly get help. I downloaded the app and the next day I received a response from the NiceDay team. My intake interview was already scheduled for the following week. I explained what had happened and was linked to psychologist Sarah.”

Good connection with practitioner

“I felt a good connection with Sarah. All our conversations took place digitally. In the beginning this took some getting used to, but I felt safe with her and had no trouble opening up. During the conversations I felt heard and taken seriously and it felt like a safe environment to tell my story. ”

Advantages online treatment

“The advantage of online treatment is that it is very accessible. You don’t have to sit in a waiting room and tell your story to the doctor’s assistant first, then to the doctor and then to a psychologist. You can get help directly and for me there were no waiting lists. This makes mental help easily accessible. “

“At times it was confrontational, but very helpful, to gain insight into my thoughts. The trackers in the app allowed me to register my panic attacks, but also how I expected to feel in certain situations and whether I really felt that way. This helped me realize that things don’t always go the way you expect, it doesn’t always have to go wrong. ”

“It was also nice to stay active outside the sessions via the assignments or reading articles that Sarah sent me after each session. This allowed me to stay productive and reduce my stress. ”

Would you recommend NiceDay?

“I would definitely recommend NiceDay because it is so accessible. If you are unsure about approaching someone, or you don’t feel comfortable seeing a doctor, you can turn to NiceDay. You quickly get in touch with the NiceDay team and receive immediate help. I have experienced this as very positive. ”

If we look at the current world, technology is almost indispensable. We manage our affairs with the help of internet banking. We order our food via an app. We can monitor our steps with our telephone. All in all, technology has given our life a new dimension. Now we can also get effective coaching and therapy online!

The online relationship

One of the most important factors for successful treatment is the therapeutic relationship between client and therapist. A good connection with your therapist gives a safe and familiar feeling. With a good therapeutic relationship there is a better understanding between the client and therapist, leading to clear goals and tasks

Research has shown that it is also possible to build a good therapeutic relationship online, and sometimes is even better than with therapy in the doctor’s office. I also have experienced this in my daily sessions with my clients online. A good therapeutic relationship is also possible during online treatment, such as NiceDay.

What are the benefits of online therapy?

  1. You are in control

With NiceDay you are directly involved in your own therapeutic process: by writing in your journal about how you feel, what happened or what went well, you gain more insight into your own process. You can also take matters into your own hands and send a chat message to your practitioner when needed.

  1. Flexibility

With online therapy you are not location dependent. This means that sessions can take place in the comfort and familiarity of your own home. Or even in the evening, in accordance with your practitioner. This also means you can often get direct help in the moments you are struggling, or just before or after a difficult conversation with that one person.

  1. Accessible and fast

Thanks to the online approach of NiceDay you can look for help in an accessible way and have quick and easy contact with your practitioner. You are always just a click away from help!

  1. Your practitioner focuses more on your individual needs

With NiceDay it is possible to register feelings, thoughts and actions in the app. Instead of “how was your week?” your practitioner will have a better overview of how you are doing. The practitioner gets a good picture of your good and bad moments and can respond immediately. With a chat message between sessions you stay in contact with each other and your practitioner is more beside you than in front of you.

Jennifer is 34 years old, a proud mom and lives with her 13 year old daughter in Capelle aan den Ijssel. She is studying Social Work at the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences and will graduate next year! In addition to spending time with her daughter and being busy with her studies, she was also treated for her depression last year. She had a difficult time. Having suicidal thoughts and suicidal tendencies, made her do something about it. After registering with PsyQ, she was given the option for 100% online treatment and she said yes! We asked her how she experienced this.

What did you think when you first heard about 100% online treatment?
At first I felt some resistance. I have previously been treated for my borderline disorder and I do not like change. I was used to face to face conversations in the consultation room. Yet something in me said: say yes, just try it!

And how did you feel after the first conversation?
I gave it (online treatment) a try and (after the first conversation) I thought it was good! If I hadn’t liked it, I would just have stopped. But I liked it immediately. The thing is, I did not have to go to a physical location. I could do the sessions from work, I would book a meeting room and I would take some time for myself. Of course, I mentioned it at work and they were very helpful! They thought it was nice. After all, it was also for my own development, which they in return could benefit from.

Can you tell something more about your treatment? For example, how often did you talk to your practitioner?
I started in February and completed my treatment in June. I had video contact with my practitioner Feline on a weekly basis and if I was having a hard time I had the option to send a chat message. As soon as Feline had time, she would respond to the chat message and check if I wanted to call.

Have you ever had contact between sessions?
Once I was really having a rough time, I had experienced something bad at college and sent a message about it. Feline did not respond right away, but I still liked the fact that I could send the message immediately. Especially because I was able to express my feelings at that time, I did not keep walking around with them. Normally, if you are in regular treatment, you  have to call to get something of your chest and that is usually not possible. However, I was reassured that I could send a message knowing that I would receive an answer. When she responded, she asked if she should call me, but it was no longer needed. Talking about it via chat was enough at that moment.

Did the video call or the contact via the app not feel impersonal?
I must admit, I actually found my earlier “traditional” treatment less personal… I did not feel a connection, it felt more like an obligation, also for my practitioner back then. When I did traditional treatment, I did not have the feeling that I was being heard if you know what I mean. With Feline it was different, I felt that she was there, that she understood me and she always kept asking. Even though we were not together in a physical space, even though it was online. I think online is actually better.

How did you use the NiceDay app, in addition to video calling and chatting?
I kept my schedule in the app. Also regarding nutrition, because I sometimes tend to skip meals. In addition, I registered my mood in the app: how did I feel during the day? And what effect did certain events have on my mood? If I felt bad in the morning and in the evening I felt fine, I could see why that was. I saw small improvements, day by day. But sometimes also even during the day!

Would you recommend a treatment via NiceDay to others?
Hell yes! Taking the first step is scary but give it a chance. It helped me so well! I am glad that this option exists and I hope it will become more known so that more people can be helped.
