Emotional dysregulation disorder

Question
Vraag

I have been traumatized by a narcissistic mother for 70 years and only realize that since she passed away 3 years ago. My therapists originally assumed that I have bipolar disorder, but now they believe that I have emotional dysregulation disorder. I am completely confused. What would you recommend to me? I’m fairly stable now that she’s not terrorising me mentally, but should I still be doing therapy at my age?

I understand that these terms may cause confusion. Most of the symptoms of borderline personality disorder as described in the DSM are about the dysfunction in regulating emotions. That's why many people prefer the new term: emotion dysregulation disorder (EDD). EDD is intended to eventually replace the term 'borderline' with a description that is more accurate.

You indicate that you have been traumatized for 70 years. I'm curious how many problems you experience as a result of your past. If you notice that you suffer daily, and/or you notice that it affects your daily functioning, it certainly does not hurt to call in professional help. You wonder if you should still go to therapy at your age. I would like to let you know that you don't have to worry about your age and that therapy is for everyone!

Perhaps it helps to make a cost-benefit analysis of this situation. A cost-benefit analysis is a schematic overview of the advantages and disadvantages of a particular choice, opinion, strategy or consideration. You map out the real advantages and disadvantages in the short and long term. Write the two options side by side. This can, for example, be a certain choice (to go into therapy or not). For each option, write down what it will cost you (costs) and what it will bring you (benefits) in the short-term and long-term. Think of the consequences for yourself, for your environment, for your future, etcetera.

I hope to have informed you sufficiently and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to let me know.
