My brain feels exhausted when I try to think about any concept deeply or think too hard. Why is the deepening thinking and prolonged thinking exhausting? What should I do to remediate this situation? Do you have any advice?

Hi,
Thanks for your question. It is important to reach out for support when we are struggling with something.

Feeling mentally exhausted when thinking deeply or prolonged thinking is a common experience for many individuals. Firstly, deep thinking requires significant cognitive effort and can place a heavy load on your brain's resources. This can lead to mental fatigue and exhaustion over time. Furthermore, new research suggests that extended intense cognitive work causes specific brain chemicals to build up in the prefrontal cortex, causing fatigue. If you are interested you can read more about this here via this link.

If we are feeling mentally fatigued it is important to get enough rest and sleep. Here are some tips that may give you some guidance:

  • Take regular breaks: It's important to give your brain periodic rest to recharge. Taking short breaks after deep thinking can help to replenish your energy. Engage in activities that you enjoy and that help you relax. Activities that allow your mind to wander such as walking and listening to music, or mindfulness exercises can be particularly helpful in helping your brain to recharge.
  • Practice self-care: Taking care of your overall well-being can help reduce mental exhaustion. Make sure you are getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and engaging in regular physical exercise.
  • Remember that it is normal to feel tired and fatigued after working hard and concentrating, and it is important to practice self-care.

This exercise can be helpful to induce physical and mental relaxation.

Take care!

Kind regards,
Martijn
