Autism

Question
Vraag

I have a question about coping with autism that I have myself.
My form is Asperger Autism./hsp
It makes me sometimes look for less social circles.

2 questions arise on how to make it known to others.
And set the boundaries for myself so I don’t go to extremes.

Thanks for your message. You have been diagnosed with Asperger Autism and want to know how you can inform other people about it and how to set boundaries for yourself so you don't go over your limits.

These are really good questions and it's really great that you are thinking about these things and how you can take care of your own mental health.
In regards to your boundaries a good place to start is to really investigate thoroughly the situations you find difficult and what your limits are. It can help to write it down on paper so you have a concrete summary. You can ask yourself questions like:

  • What situations do you find difficult exactly?
  • Is it when you speak one on one or rather when you are socialising in a group?
  • What do you find difficult about it?
  • When do you come across these situations and how often?
  • How do they make you feel and when do you start to feel this way?
  • What kind of thoughts do you have in these situations?

Once you have a good understanding of the situations you find difficult you can get a good understanding of what your limits are, what signals that you are close to your limit and investigate any interventions you can take to make sure you don't go over your limits.

In regard to communicating your diagnosis, if you feel comfortable doing it you can pick a safe and quiet place to talk about it with someone you trust and feel supported by. You can think about in advance how you are going to do it and what you would like to tell them exactly. Would you like to inform them about your diagnosis and what it means? Would you like to tell them about the things you find difficult and how they can support you?
