Parents and depression

Question
Vraag

I think that my mother may be struggling with depression and I don’t know what to do. And she keeps having fights with my dad and I worry that she isn’t happy anymore. Unlike my dad she is also unhappy with her job, she has even continued studying again. And I am worried that my mother doesn’t get the chance to fulfill her wishes. And just today when they came back from dinner with friends she was upset and nearly crying.

Hi,

Thanks for your message. It is important to reach out for support when we are struggling with something. You tell me you suspect that your mother is suffering from depression, causing you to worry about her and her well-being.

When someone you care for is experiencing depression, it can be an emotionally challenging and upsetting experience. That is why it is important to take good care of yourself. It is therefore important to keep doing things that you enjoy and find relaxing. Keep in touch with family and friends so that you also have somewhere to go to vent and for support. In addition, training and support groups are also organized for those who have a family member with depression.

While you can provide support for your loved one it is important to realize that it is not your responsibility to treat diagnose or provide treatment. You can encourage them to go seek professional help or go to a general practitioner. While you can't force anyone to get help if they don't want it, you can reassure them that it's OK to ask for help and that there is help out there.
