Recent graduate anxiety

Question
Vraag

I am in doubt I will be of value to any employer. I just graduated this August and never had a failing grade but I don’t feel confident at all about my skills. What can I do to appreciate myself?

It's not unusual to feel insecure about yourself and your skills. When you graduate, you're entering a whole new world of work, which can be both overwhelming and challenging. New challenges always come with new fears, and that's actually a good thing. It's a way to prepare yourself and avoid mistakes. Let me give you some tips:

  • Acknowledge your insecurity and talk about it with peers. Many people have faced the same challenges and it can help to overcome the overwhelming feeling by just sharing your experiences.
  • If you feel you're a perfectionist, this can work in two ways: 1. You try to avoid any mistakes, 2. You try to do everything the best you can. While they are similar in reaching the same goal, they differ in perspective. The latter is a more motivating and approaching perspective, while the first is a more fearful and avoidant one. Perhaps you can read some things about perfectionism: https://niceday.app/en/perfectionism-could-you-take-it-down-a-notch/
  • It can help to think about your past victories. Everyone has overcome new and challenging things: going to high school for the first time, having a job for the first time and trying a new sport. They come with the same challenges you face now. How did you overcome those things the last time? How well did you do?
  • Many people with low self-esteem look at themselves in a less realistic way. It can be a good idea to revise your ideas about yourself and take a closer look. Maybe the next article inspires you: https://niceday.app/en/do-i-have-a-realistic-self-image/

If you notice your self-confidence causes you a lot of stress and problems in daily life, I would advise contacting your GP for some personal assistance. The issues you're facing are not uncommon and are very well treatable nowadays.
