Autism

Question
Vraag

I have been diagnosed with DID in the past. It doesn’t bother me anymore. Yet it still felt that something was not right. Last year I was diagnosed with Autism and then things became much clearer. But also a lot of frustrations, because in the past things were expected that always didn’t work out. And I started to feel like I wasn’t doing well or wasn’t trying hard enough. So a very negative self-image has developed. I would like to know if I can still turn that around by looking at myself in a different way.

I'm sorry to hear that you're suffering from a negative self-image, but I'm glad that you have taken the step to ask us your question.

If you've felt over and over that you were doing something wrong, or weren't trying hard enough, it can indeed have a major impact on the development of your self-image. You state that you have a diagnosis of autism. Characteristics or symptoms of autism differ greatly in men and women, and are different for everyone diagnosed with autism. It depends on the moment and the situation. As a result, the response of people with autism to the same situation can be completely different.

It is important to get to know yourself: what characteristics suit me? What is going well and what is not going well? By understanding what you're like, you can also understand what you can and cannot do and what you need to be able to do certain things. By eventually doing things that work for you or that suit you, your self-image will be more positive. And that's what you ultimately want to work towards!

Getting to know yourself is very difficult to do alone, and it is therefore often necessary to get help from a psychologist who can sort this out with you. So do not hesitate to seek help to guide you in this process! If you would like some more information about online help via NiceDay, you can find more about it via this link.

I advise you to find out some more information about autism on the internet and then get to know yourself a bit better. Everyone has good qualities, including you! Perhaps it is time for you to discover them.

Good luck!
